Morphs: A herpetoculture term that refers to color and pattern variations that deviate from the wild type appearance.
Mutation: random changes to the properties of a gene, giving rise to variations in form that may be inherited by subsequent generations.
Phenotype: the physical appearance of an organism.
Locus: the Location of a gene on the chromosome. This term is sometimes used in its plural form loci
Allele: different forms of the same gene which occupy the same locus. When genes occur on the same locus they are said to be allelic.
Heterozygous (het): genes are paired with one copy being inherited from each parent. When the genes inherited at a particular locus are dissimilar the organism is heterozygous at that locus.
Homozygous: the combination of both alleles at the given locus are identical.
Dominant: A domino gene is one which the heterozygous and homozygous phenotype or indistinguishable. Dominant genes mask the influence of the jeans that are paired with at that locus.
Incomplete Dominance: in incomplete Dominance genes, the heterozygous form’s phenotype is intermediate between the homozygous and normal phenotypes.
Recessive: also referred to as “ simple recessive” or “autosomal recessive”. Recessive genes do not affect the phenotype in their heterozygous (het) form. The only effect of recessive genes only manifests in the homozygous individuals.
Polygenic: Polygenetic traits are controlled by multiple, non-allelic genes. These trades are sometimes referred to as “line bred” traits in herpetoculture.
Epistasis: in this phenomenon, the effects of one gene are altered by the presence of one or more genes occurring at the separate locus.
Co-Dominance: is not a type of inheritance! This term often gets mixed with incomplete dominance. Co-Dominance means That neither allele can mask the expression of the other alleles. An example in humans would be the ABO blood group, where alleles A and alleles B are both expressed. So if an individual inherits allele A from their mother and allele B from their father, they have blood type AB.
